Background:
Dr Karen Henderson, Director of Research and Innovation at the University of Reading, has received a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to higher education. She was presented with the honour by Princess Anne at a ceremony held at Windsor Castle on 17 February 2026.
Dr Henderson was named in the King’s Birthday Honours List in recognition of her leadership and long-standing contribution to strengthening professional standards and expanding opportunities for technical staff in universities. Her work has helped raise the profile of technicians and improve access to career development pathways across the sector.
Under her direction, the University of Reading earned Employer Champion status from the Science Council. The award acknowledged the University’s commitment to professional development and recognition for technical professionals.
Dr Henderson also played a leading role in developing a new Higher Education Technician Apprenticeship Standard through a national Trailblazer Group. The initiative created more apprenticeships and welcomed people from a wider range of backgrounds into technical careers.
Her contribution to equality and inclusion has been equally significant. She co-chaired the University’s first Silver award under the Athena Swan framework, which promotes gender equality in higher education and research. She later helped shape a national Athena Swan framework tailored specifically for Professional, Technical and Operational (PTO) staff. Following this work, Reading became the first PTO team in the UK to achieve a Silver Athena Swan Award.
After receiving the honour, Dr Henderson described the day as unforgettable. She thanked colleagues and students for their support, especially those in Technical Services, and dedicated the MBE to them, praising their skill, dedication, and the important role they play in supporting staff and students.
Dr Henderson also continues to serve as co-chair of the London and South East England Technician Commitment Leads Network, working with leaders across the sector to improve recognition and support for technical staff.
