Background-

GEMS Education has announced plans for a new international school in Zanzibar. The school, being developed with Infinity Developments, is expected to begin operations in 2028.

The new campus will have the capacity to serve up to 1,100 students, making it one of the largest international schools in the region. Construction is expected to begin soon following the signing of a pre-operational agreement earlier this year.

Located near Zanzibar’s historic Stone Town, the school will include science and information technology laboratories. The project will focus on academic performance, creativity and character development while supporting modern learning needs.

The partners said the initiative supports Zanzibar’s education priorities, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, digital learning and teacher development. They also see the project as an opportunity to strengthen access to international education in the region.

The Zanzibar school forms part of broader plans by GEMS Education and Infinity Developments to expand educational opportunities across East Africa. The two groups are also exploring projects in Rwanda, Malawi and mainland Tanzania.

GEMS School Management, the operating arm of GEMS Education, said the goal is to help establish Zanzibar as a centre for educational excellence in the Indian Ocean region. The company added that the project aims to provide high-quality education while supporting local talent development.

The project comes as international school operators increasingly view East Africa as a growth market, supported by economic development, rising demand for international curricula and growing middle-class populations across the region.
