Background :

Sudan and UNESCO have joined hands to develop the country’s first Education Sector Climate Change Strategy, a move that puts climate resilience at the centre of Sudan’s education recovery.

A national consultation workshop launched the process, drawing in senior government officials, development partners, academics, and civil society representatives.

Education Minister Al-Tahami Al-Zain Hajar opened the workshop with a direct message. Rebuilding Sudan starts with its schools. He said schools form the foundation for restoring people and stability, and that weaving climate change into education planning is no longer optional as the country moves toward post-war recovery.

UNESCO Representative to Sudan Junaid Sorosh-Wali pushed the point further. He said climate change has crossed into education territory and is no longer just an environmental problem.

Sudan’s decision to build a dedicated strategy, he added, puts young people on a path to becoming part of the solution rather than only bearing the consequences.

UNESCO praised the Ministry for keeping schools open and children learning despite conditions that would have shut most systems down. The organisation called the strategy the first of its kind in Sudan and described it as a historic move toward a stronger, future-ready education system.

The workshop covered a wide range of priorities including climate-resilient school planning, safer infrastructure, curriculum updates, teacher development, disaster risk reduction, and climate financing.

UNESCO is backing the entire process with technical support drawn from its Greening Education Partnership and Climate Smart Education Systems Initiative.

The consultation kicks off a nationally led effort that will end with a full strategy and a clear roadmap to protect Sudan’s education sector from climate disruption.
